You forgot Iran in 1953, where we put a dictator back in power after Iran set up their own secular democracy.

Or how about our assistance in installing another dictator in Chile... Pinochet was our man...

Yeah, I'm not even sure how big of a list we'd have if it was us placing dictators. When I was thinking of China however, I was thinking during the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1901. Oh and then there is Taiwan.

As far as the idea of granting legitimacy, that's actually a huge deal for any nation or political faction. We hear often how this nation, that culture, government, group, seeks to be "recognized," as in acknowledged that they exist as an entity. We hear it all the time regarding Israel. No one seems to not get that... So here, for NK to have been ignored so long it means something to them, and to their standing among nations.

Why exactly I can only offer opinions as to why they might feel such. To a great degree however it would be much like being shunned here. IOW, say you post, try to contribute and participate, yet no one ever responds to you. They don't answer your posts, argue, or even insult you. They just plain and simply act as though you don't exist, and anything you have to say is not worth their time.

So to be recognized or granting legitimacy... Means that as a nation or government, NK is now considered one of the big boys. Not only worthy of having just any old nation recognize you... Yet a superpower. More so the leader of that superpower considering you worthy enough of his time to leave a summit with allied powers (the G7) all but blowing them off, all to meet with you.

In a sense, it makes NK peer... Think about it. Not only is the U.S. willing to meet with them, they're willing to sit down and listen to your demands. In this case because he's a threat. Though in the end, NK just went from the mouse that roared to a world power worthy of utmost attention.

That's a lot of clout... How good or bad it is, hard to say.

I think you'll find you are wrong
    Very wrong.
It would also appear you are a little confused , or ignorant of some of history around other areas mentioned.
    ("invading from Mexico " ? who ? when ? )

    Invasion:
    An invasion is a military offensive in which large parts of combatants of one geopolitical entity aggressively enter territory controlled by another such entity, generally with the objective of either conquering; liberating or re-establishing control or authority over a territory; forcing the partition of a country;
    - - - - - -

So by definition , it can be argued that the US invaded what is now North Korea , Vietnam , and Iraq , and I guess Afghanistan.
Certainly the first Gulf War was an all out invasion , in any mans language.

The fact that the objectives were not achieved , and or a withdrawal was forced , dose not change the fact that they were invasions ,
just the same as Argentina invaded the Falklands , and Nazi Germany invaded France.

OK, so breaking down what you posted:

Before Trump, no president sat down face to face with a North Korean leader to negotiate. But...
MULTIPLE presidents did end up negotiating with North Korea in pursuit of a deal of some sort. And...
MULTIPLE presidents eventually entered into an agrrement as a result of those negotiations. Only to find that...
MULTIPLE presidents discovered they'd been hoodwinked (or chain-jerked, if you will).

Yet, Trump deciding not to follow the well-worn path of failure that MULTIPLE presidents continued to travel, THAT is Kim-win/Trump-lose? Would you prefer Trump had simply done what MULTIPLE presidents did, which was to gloriously succeed in showing how good they were at failure?

No, the reason all those MULTIPLE presidents failed so miserably was because North Korea knew that anytime they needed money, all they had to do was go into "nutty mode" and those other presidents went running to them throwing cash and concessions at them in exchange for playing nice again.

Clinton OKs Deal to Stop N. Korea's Nuclear Program : Asia: Pact will be signed Friday. It gives Pyongyang economic, political rewards for cooperation on weapons.

    10/19/94

The accord, concluded Monday in Geneva, gives North Korea a series of economic and political benefits in exchange for promises to freeze and eventually dismantle its current nuclear facilities, which the CIA believes have been used to make the material for one to two nuclear weapons.

    -------------

    North Korea Demands U.S. Concessions

    11/17/06

The United States must offer concessions if it wants North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons efforts, Pyongyang said today (see GSN, Nov. 17).

    ---------------

Why We're Always Fooled by North Korea

    11/24/10

In 1994, Clinton administration negotiators acknowledged that North Korea might be experimenting with uranium enrichment, but they chose to focus on an agreement called the Agreed Framework freezing the North's plutonium production at the Yongbyon facility. Intelligence agencies followed the uranium trail, but policy makers ignored it. As North Korea's most senior defector, Hwang Jang Yop, told us in 2004, the regime negotiated the Agreed Framework with every intention of "confronting the U.S. with a nuclear deterrent" before the reactors were complete and inspections became necessary.

In 2002, the Bush administration received compelling intelligence about active North Korean efforts to procure the equipment and materials necessary for a highly enriched uranium (HEU) facility. The experts had put together multiple-source information like a Rosetta Stone in an amazing piece of sleuthing. The exact state of the program was still unclear, but estimates were that it could be up and running within the decade. This was right on target, as we now know.
    ...
After the CIA publicly noted North Korean complicity in a Syrian reactor construction project that Israel bombed in September 2007, the U.S. negotiating team successfully argued within the U.S. government to set aside the proliferation issue in order to focus on obtaining North Korean agreement on "verification protocols" to account for the plutonium at Yongbyon.

As a result, U.S. sanctions were lifted and North Korean illicit funds that had been frozen in a bank in Macao were returned, but no protocols were signed. Instead, North Korea conducted a second nuclear test. Meantime, evidence mounted that Myanmar was next in line seeking nuclear capabilities from Pyongyang.

It should be obvious by now that Pyongyang seeks acknowledgment as a nuclear state and intends to continue leveraging its proliferation threat to enjoy perpetual concessions from the U.S.

    -----------------------

Every time, the US backed down and gave in, in exchange for promises. Trump didn't back down. He racheted up. He upped the sanctions. He upped the pressure on countries he knew were violating trade sactions. North Korea was the one to blink. And when one of Kim's high-ranking aides got mouthy about Pence, Trump's cancellation was a well-calculated message to Kim he wasn't a "Sure, let's keep negotiating while your leaders attend "Death to America" rallies" type of president. And Kim put a muzzle on her and sent his top envoy to patch things up with Trump.

Pompeo said sanctions will remain in place until Pyongyang “completely and verifiably” eliminates all weapons of mass destruction. None of this, "OK, here are all your rewards when you haven't lifted a finger yet, but suckers like us MULTIPLE presidents believe you'll get around to it."

I'm sure many would like to be able to forget ,
      and ,
that had the US not been so cocksure n bolshy , the Korean war could have been over ,
      two years earlier ,
with the border between N and SK well north of the 39th ,
      and Pyongyang in SK.

      Remember:
China told the US they would not retaliate , so long as the US stopped short and stayed back from the Yalu River.
But , they would not tolerate them comming up to the Yalu.
The US ignored the warning , got pushed back to the 39th , over 2 years of wasted war , and got an unsatisfactory cease fire.

What do American history books say about that ?
      I wonder

or is that like all the invasions they didn't do :)

If only East and West could pool there resources a lot of problems could be solved, but getting there would take a lot of country's to pull there heads in , put there egos to one side, that's my 5 cents worth

    Back to subject.

When you think about it ,
It's amazing what difference the possession of nukes and delivery system/vehicles makes.

When it is all boiled down , that's what this is all about ,
and why the meet came about.

As Kim knew , once you have nukes , you have to be taken seriously ,
    like it or not.
    Then ,
once he proved he had it all ,
China had to make sure it didn't all get out of control.
They want , and are very happy to have NK between them and the US/SK ,
but they certainly don't want them taking toxic pot shots at eachother ,
and Kim can not afford to ignore China's "instructions" for to long.
He's toast if China shuts him down.

The combination of having his ultimate weapons and defence , and the need to keep his backing and back door open , gives him both bargaining power , and incentive to bargain ,
and he is a master player.
We just have to wait n see how he will play.

The horse trading will be interesting to say the least.

No matter how "mentally ill" you think Rodman is, he is still far more sane than Obama and better at foreign diplomacy as well...:hilarious:

Rodman, wearing a red "Make America Great Again" hat, blasted former President Barack Obama for not taking the North Korean leader seriously.

Five years ago, Rodman said, Kim told Rodman "certain things" to relay to Obama concerning potential negotiations, but the former president "didn't even give me the time of day -- he just brushed me off, but that didn't deter me."

The punk ass Obama did nothing.

The punk ass bitch only played the politics to his leftist/communist/socialist/ self.

The punk ass bitch catered to Jarrets personal agenda with Iran...while doing nothing to advance any world peace.

The punk ass bitch catered to the international terrorists needs and demands.

The punk ass bitch had no intentions advancing world peace, because he had no idea how to approach such matters, that's not who he was.

The punk ass bitch spent $trillions on socialism and political paybacks.

The punk ass bitch was elected because he was black...not experienced.

...NOW... this country has a true leader for American exceptionalism...and the Globalists that get elected in the U.S. are having a bad day due to it.
